August 2021 Nuggets

August 2021 Nuggets

Starting with an apology for neglecting my Nuggets in July. Nuggets are back now, though, and these particular Nuggets are pretty darn juicy if you ask me. It’s been a hot, weird summer and these bands are a handful that I have been returning to over the last couple months. I hope you like them.

Gender Roles – Tip Of My Tongue

Gender Roles bang out some punky indie rock with really interesting melodies. They’re from the UK, but they sound a lot more fun than that (just kidding, don’t get mad at me). This upbeat stuff has been a really nice reprieve for a hot, depressing summer.

Culxr House – Freedom Summer

This came out of nowhere for me and I really can’t say enough about how it has clicked. There’s so much that is hard to explain about this record. It’s from a collective of artists all tied to a community hub called Culxr House that’s in Omaha. It came out on Saddle Creek? I don’t know, it’s all very strange but the early 00’s style hip hop on display speaks for itself. Very cool.

Skirts – Easy

Skirts, I think, is mostly a vehicle for Alex Montenegro’s songwriting but the band assembled is really fantastic. The cover is perfect. This is music to swim with your friends in a lake to on a lazy afternoon. Folky, but not folksy. I love it.

Magic Ghrelin – It’s All Happening!

Self-proclaimed band of weirdos from Jersey Shore smashing out some smashing punk rock. Feels like a bunch of good friends playing in a garage and laughing about how cool the songs are sounding. They’re right too, songs are super cool.

See you next time.
