June 2021 Nuggets

I’ve been in a mood lately that mostly has me listening to bouncy punk rock sort of stuff. Pop punk, if you please. Melodic hardcore if you don’t? I’m trying not to make this months Nuggets installment only that type of music because there’s so much more. I did add some of it though, so don’t be upset with me.

Shitty Neighbors – Whole Life Policy

This band from Toledo really pushes all the right buttons for me. Joseph (you all know Joseph) said it was like Through Being Cool with more f-words in it, which isn’t that far off but it has a little more edge and the vocals are way less twee which is something that never worked for me with Saves The Day (sorry!). I love this, though, and the record just blazes through 10 tracks in 24 minutes and there are no lulls.

Fiddlehead – The Years

Thankfully, Fiddlehead are getting a ton of nice things written about them and their new record, Between the Richness. Their previous LP felt like lightning in a bottle and that musicians from Have Heart and Basement and other hardcore bands could make a “post-hardcore” record that is so… pretty? and sad? and hopeful? But they did. And they did it again with this record, which is probably the more impressive feat.

Chisel – Do Go On

Chisel is pre-Pharmacists Ted Leo. Those pre-popularity bands are always interesting. Sometimes just as a curiosity, but this Chisel record is actually good. You can see all the seeds being planted for what Ted Leo would do after, but some different stuff going on here too. A little more punk when it kicks in and that bit at the beginning that sounds like it’s going to be a heavy shoegaze band, for instance.

PACKS – Hangman

PACKS is new to me and this record is really good. It’s fake-out lo-fi indie rock. Lulls you into thinking you know what you’re hearing and then you start to hear these really clever melodies and layers that build them into something else entirely.

See you next time.
