April 2021 Nuggets

Yeah Is What We Have – You’re Right
I am such a sucker for this jangly power pop. This is pure Teenage Fanclub & Sloan worship and there is nothing wrong with that. This is all done by one guy, too? Amazing. It reminds me of another band from Canada called The Dates that disappeared from Bandcamp at some point. Music to strut down the boulevard to.
Teenage Cool Kids – Reasons Why
There’s a new LP/CD reissue of this Teenage Cool Kids record from 2008. It’s more straight-forward indie rock than Parquet Courts, which was formed by a few Teenage Cool Kids members. This has that one-take practice space recording charm to it.
Themselves – Rapping4Money (feat. cLOUDDEAD)
I miss cLOUDDEAD and everything Anticon a lot. That was such an important movement to me back in the early ’00s. It still feels like there’s a lot to mine from that weirdo rap genre (see ex-Milo, now R.A.P. Ferreira, for instance) and the mix-and-match producers/rappers/projects collective concept. This track on the pre-LP mixtape that Themselves released got cLOUDDEAD (Doseone, Why?, and Odd Nosdam) back together for a song and it’s just… great. They all compliment each other so well it really made me nostalgic for their old records together. Luckily, there was a recent re-release of all the cLOUDDEAD material by Alpha Pup since they seemed like they might be lost forever after Mush records went defunct. Definitely check those out here: (cLOUDDEAD, Peel Sessions, This About The City).
Blue Ox – Lesser Gods and the Science of Superstition
If you, like me, enjoy having someone yell at you over downtuned guitars this Blue Ox record will be a real treat. It’s a balancing act, this blend of hardcore, crust, metal, and whatever other nasty music, but Blue Ox pulls it off really well. Great drummer, too.
Byeeee.
